Word Contrast Listening

Twenty pairs of Thai words that differ by exactly one thing. Hear one, pick which it was — the shortest way to find out which distinction your ear is not making.

No signup. Four kinds of difference.

Today’s Plan uses this diagnostically: a miss here says which sound to work on next.

Four contrast categories with pair counts: vowel length, aspiration, final ending, tone
Twenty pairs, grouped by what separates them.

What a round looks like

One difference at a time

01

Sorted by what makes the pair different

Vowel length has eight pairs, aspiration six, final endings four, tone two. Keeping them apart matters — failing a vowel-length pair and failing a tone pair are different problems with different fixes, and a mixed drill tells you only that you missed one.

Four contrast categories with their pair counts: vowel length, aspiration, final ending and tone, plus an all-contrasts option
Twenty pairs, grouped by the single feature that separates them.
02

Short enough to use as a check

Three minutes. This is the drill to run when something is not landing and you do not yet know what — it is faster to find out which contrast you are missing than to practise all of them.

Aspiration is the one English speakers underestimate: พ and ท carry a puff of air that ป and ต do not, and English does not use that difference to change meaning.
