Phase 1

Syllable Anatomy

Consonant Classes
~5 min

A Thai syllable has a frame.

Start with the consonant and vowel. A tone belongs to the whole syllable, and a final consonant may close it. Some syllables leave one or more of these visible slots empty, but this is the frame the later writing lessons will keep using.

Initial

starts the sound

Vowel

◌า

shapes the middle

Tone

◌้

belongs to the syllable

Final

may close the sound

The slots do different jobs.

The initial is where you begin. The vowel may be written beside, above, below, or around it. A tone mark is not another spoken letter, and the final changes how the syllable ends. The next lessons zoom in on the consonant and vowel positions separately.

Worked payoff — no quiz

Put the four engine-backed pieces together and they make a real reviewed word:

บ้าน

baan

house · Falling tone

You do not need to calculate that yet. For now, keep the frame: initial, vowel, tone, final.
