Thai question words typically stay in their default position — usually where the answer would go. Fronting a question word for emphasis is possible but less common in everyday speech. Unlike English, there is no obligatory movement to the front.

Key insight
In English: “Where are you going?” (question word first). In Thai: “คุณจะไปที่ไหน” = “You will go where?” The question word replaces the answer in the same position. To form a question, just swap the answer for the question word.
