Thai chains multiple verbs in sequence where English uses prepositions, infinitives, or helper phrases. No linking word is needed between them. Each verb adds directional, purposive, or manner meaning to the chain.
Chain patterns — English vs Thai
bpai · go
gin · eat
ไปกิน
Thai stacks the verbs directly. English needs "to" but Thai does not.
maa · come
duu · look/watch
มาดู
Direction verb (มา) + action verb (ดู). English needs "and" — Thai does not.
ao · take
bpai · go
hâi · give
เอาไปให้
Three verbs: take + direction + give. English needs prepositions ("to", "for") — Thai stacks verbs.
àwk · exit
bpai · go
khâang nâawk · outside
ออกไปข้างนอก
ออก = exit. ไป = directional motion away. ข้างนอก = destination. Each adds a layer of spatial meaning.
bpai · go
sûė · buy
khâao · rice/food
ไปซื้อข้าว
ไปซื้อข้าว — direction + action + object. Very common in daily Thai.
How to read a verb chain
1
First verb
Sets the main action or direction
ออก (exit), ไป (go), มา (come)
2
Second verb
Adds purpose, manner, or destination
กิน (eat), ดู (see), ให้ (give)
3
No connector needed
No "to", "and", or "for" between verbs
ไปกิน (everyday) · ไปเพื่อกิน (formal)
What about เพื่อ (phûea)?
เพื่อ + verb is correct Thai and means “in order to”. It is more explicit and formal — you will see it in writing, speeches, and careful explanations. However, in everyday speech Thai speakers almost always just stack verbs directly without any connector. Think of it like “in order to” vs. “to” in English — both are grammatical, but the shorter form dominates casual conversation.
ไปกิน — “go eat” (everyday)
ไปเพื่อกิน — “go in order to eat” (formal/explicit — perfectly correct)

Common mistakes to avoid
Inserting English-style prepositions
Don't add “to” or “for” between Thai verbs. เอาไปให้ is three verbs in a row — adding ไปที่... or ให้สำหรับ... sounds unnatural.
Treating verb chains as redundant
Each verb in the chain adds specific spatial or relational meaning. ออกไป (exit-go) means motion outward; ออก alone just means “to exit”. The second verb matters.
